A rooftop tent seems to be the best solution. But how do you find the perfect one? You want to go far north where the storms are howling and heavy rains are pouring, as well as far south, probably facing sandstorms and ubiquitous dust.

We visited exhibition grounds, compared, talked to manufacturers, compared again . . and luckily, we met Luke and his team and picked up their Ponderosa rooftop tent.

Mounting the tent upon the roof of our canopy was easy. We have been using it twice in Iceland, for a total of four and a half months, one month in Greece, and recently three months on our trip through southern Africa. Having passed 40,000km, literally over hill and dale, the tent is still solidly fixed as it was the first day.

With the help of the telescopic ladder, our tent opens and closes easily. Four down sleeping bags, two cushions, and some clothes can be stored inside. The pleasantly padded mattress is 2400mm x 1800mm (95” x 72”), large enough to offer as much comfort as we have at home.

Weather conditions in Iceland are rather challenging for outdoor equipment. Our tent proved to be impervious to moisture – even long-lasting rain, mostly combined with heavy storms, could not get through it. We always stayed dry and comfortable. When stormy weather was expected, it was a good idea to secure the Ponderosa with the tie-down lines. By doing so, we always felt safe. Needless to say, the annex was a very helpful addition to our setup.

Environmental conditions in Africa are equally demanding, you have to cope with sand and dust – anywhere, anytime. Passing through the Central Kalahari GR and other numerous amazing Nature Reserves of Botswana, as well as passing through Kaokoland and the Namib desert – I am still surprised that our Ponderosa´s zippers worked perfectly until the end of our African trip.

Bugs were never a problem as the tent was generously equipped with mosquito nets. Even an elephant’s attack throwing branches onto the tent, as we were mistakenly camping below his favorite tree, could not do us any harm. The tent´s material was strong enough to resist!

To put it in a nutshell – the Treeline Ponderosa was the right choice for us. It is an excellent tent, providing safety and comfort at the same time for two persons on a long expedition trip, even coping with adverse weather conditions.
